JAPAN TRIP 2025: 12D11N in Nagoya, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Toyama & Tokyo

This trip, we went a bit wilder. Wilder in terms of area coverage, there were more prefectures we crossed in a single trip. Also, there were 12 pax in total in our group. So, it was a lot wilder as compared to all my previous trips. Get to have a full family trip is never easy, this trip was considered a decade big thing to me, to have everyone to get-together!

Ready for my big trip adventure? Here is my itinerary for the trip as well as things we eat and did. We managed to try out many types of ramen during this trip! Unagi, duck, oyster, clam, and shrimp… and everyone has their own personal favourite.

Of course, not to mention some distilleries visitation, which are really hard to come by. I will walk you through my post and detailed posts on each distillery later.

1. Eat the signature tebasaki in Sekai no Yamachan

I was really glad to be back here again, after my last trip to Nagoya in 2018. Sekai no Yamachan is a famous Japanese izakaya chain originating from Nagoya, and famous for its flavourful peppery chicken wings. One can easily munch done half dozen of this chicken wings.

2. A day trip to Ise in Mie Prefecture

The journey to Ise is about 1hour 45minutes by train from Kintetsu Nagoya Station, which makes day trip very doable from Nagoya. We checked out Futami Okitama Jinja, ate Ise Udon, visited the Japan’s Most sacred shrine – The Inner Shrine (Naiku), strolled along Ohairamachi, sipped on craft beer and sake and ate few types of street food.

3. Eat Hitsumabushi in Nagoyal

Hitsumabushi is the Nagoya’s specialty, featuring grilled eel (unagi) over a bed of rice and served in the beautiful Japanese dishware. It is to be eaten in three ways: enjoy as it is, with condiments such as wasabi, green onions and nori, and finally as ochazuke. This time, we had our Hitsumabushi in Shirakawa Meiekiten.

4. Eat Benzaiten’s mochi!

Kakuozan Fruit Daifuku Benzaiten is famous for its thin-skinned mochi filled with seasonal fruits and white bean paste. However, I am into their mochi filled with peanuts fillings and coated with crushed peanuts. Very aromatic with chewy madness. This … is the top top top mochi in my list!

5. Explore Fushimi Sake Village

If you are a nihonshu lover and happen to be in Kyoto, you absolutely must make time for the Fushimi Sake District. Blessed with pristine underground spring water, Fushimi has been one of Japan’s most celebrated sake-brewing are for centuries.

Here in Fushimi Sake District, you get a view of white-walled kura breweries along the streets, with cedar ball ornaments hanging above the entrances. Calm, quiet and lack of crowd. I love it here!

Many breweries offer tastings, museum tours and also limited bottles you can’t easily find elsewhere.

First sake to try – Sookuu 苍空 from Fujioka Shuzo. We seated ourselves at Bar “En” and started with all the namazake and a few non nama, to find out which bottles we prefer and got our pocket ready to spend on taking home (hotel) later. Each glass was priced at ¥650 and they offer this very special frozen sake that was priced at ¥750.

After the tasting, we ended up with bottles of Junmai Miyama Nishiki and Junmai Ginjo Yamadabo for the night.

5 (5)

Next, we learned about the history and sake culture in Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, also tasted a range of sake that Gekkeikan offers! At the end of the day, I kind of change my perspective towards Gekkeikan’s sake range. I learned that they offer something really quite palate-wowing, a lot better than what we can get in KL, LOL!

5 (7)

Entrance fee to Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum: ¥600, each visitor will be given an ochoko and 3 tokens in exchange for the tasting portion of sake from the sake dispenser.

5 (6)

Not to miss out sampling the “sakamizu”, the soft, high quality brewing water that wells up in the courtyard of Gekkeikan Okura Sake Musuem.

5 (1)

Last but not least, we ended up getting bottles for the night again! Happy me!

.

6. Sip up the sake from 18 sake breweries under one roof!

18 sake breweries, with over 100 sake brands, available under one roof inside this Fushimi Sakagura Koji or also known as Fushimi Sake Brewery Alley. If you have no idea what and which to order, just order their “18 breweries’ sake set”. From this, you would be able to find out which you fancy most!

There are also a number of specialty restaurant serving a great variety of dishes in this space too, offering great bites to go with your drinks.

7. Eat the fluffiest donuts – I’m Donut ?

A wildly popular donut shop in Japan, specializing in Nama donuts that are very airy, fluffy, fresh with a mochi-liked texture. Glad to see it in Kyoto and the kiasu-ness in us woke up extra early to queue for the donuts (we read about the very the long queue and we did not wanan risk it). Bought a dozen and happily enjoyed them.

Always the place to get a great stuffs or souvenirs to bring home like green tea, black bean tea, furikake, pickles, bonito, seasonings, and etc. Nishiki market is also known as the Kyoto’s Kitchen. As we had tried the delicious snacks and bites before, so this time, we focused on shopping. LOL.

9. Took the elderlies to a Lunch Omakase at Sushi Azabu Higashiyama

It was the elderlies’ first time on omakase, so we specially selected this beautiful place for a lunch omakase and yet it wouldn’t hurt so much on the wallet (or else the old ones will sound a lot if too expensive LOL).

Last autumn, they offered this Kyoto Gourmet Tour 2025 Autumn: Special Limited Course that was priced at ¥5,000 at lunch. It was an omakase course that came with 13 items in total, including nigiri and a la carte dishes; featured traditional Edomae sushi, and dishes made with local ingredients and seasonal delights.

Of course, the elderlies were happy with everything served.

11. Sample the great whiskey in Suntory Yamazaki Distillery

One of the main highlights of our trip – whiskey distillery tour in Suntory Yamazaki Distillery. I visited once back in 2016, but it is a lot harder to get a spot for tour/ visit now.

Just like the Suntory Hakushu Distillery , the paid tour is done through raffle system. You will have to submit your details at the given specific time when they are open for submission.

11 (3)

This round we managed to secure only 10 seats, I gave my tour spot to our tour members, while myself… you will definitely find me at their tasting lounge. Do note that entering to their tasting lounge, gift shop, and Yamazaki Whisky Museum requires a reservation too.

It was an amazing experience to have joined the KI NO BI Kyoto Dry Gin tasting seminar here in The House of KI NO BI. It was at the price of ¥5,000 for the English guided course. Through this seminar, we learned about KI NO BI in depths, we were guided through the production process, ingredients and philosophy.

We got to taste the six types of the elements that make up the KI NO BI. Each of them was so aromatic and distinctive in flavours!

13. Sizzle our own beef katsu in Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu

Finally, my turn on trying this after hearing so much from my bro and SIL. Beef cutlet quicky fried at high temperature to have it crispy on the outside and medium-rare on the inside. You may self-sear it if the cutlets are too rare to your liking. Served with a variety of sauces and condiments so that one get to enjoy multiple flavours on the gyukatsu at one meal. We ordered a few types of cut to share among us and found out the Premium Wagyu Sirloin has the best finest marbling texture.

Ōmichō Market — also known as “Kanazawa’s Kitchen” — is famous for its ultra-fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, along with seasonal fruits, vegetables, local produce, and specialty foods. The market is packed with small shops and restaurants where you can hop in for sushi, seafood bowls, grilled crab, oysters, and other regional dishes. Its lively atmosphere and long history make it one of the best places to experience everyday food culture in Kanazawa.

Kenroku-en is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and a must visit when travelling to Kanazawa. Its scenery transforms beautifully throughout the year, offering a completely different atmosphere in each of the four seasons; from cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, colorful autumn leaves, to the famous snow-covered landscapes in winter.

Do spare a good one hour time (at least) to appreciate the beauty of the garden, take a nice slow walk and stop for some photos.

19. Stroll along the main shopping street

Kanazawa is especially known for its disctinctive style of Oden, often called Kanazawa oden. Unlike the stronger soy-based broths common in eastern Japan or the lighter Kansai styles in western Japan, Kanazawa’s version has its own distinctive character shaped by the city’s seafood culture and local ingredients.

Not sure about you but I am a big fan of oden, especially cabbage roll, daikon and Mochi Kinchaku. Spotted this Kanaeki no Chikuwa at the station so we happily stopped by to do a quick dinner before a great supper that we were looking forwards but sadly they did not have my favourite mochi kinchaku.

20. Learn about Saburomaru Whisky in depth

So glad to have had the chance to visit Saburomaru Distillery — this craft Japanese whisky distillery in Toyama Prefecture is one of the region’s hidden gems. Toyama is already one of my favourite prefectures for its stunning alpine scenery , and the distillery adds another great reason to visit. Saburomaru is especially known for its heavily peated whisky and its unique ZEMON cast-metal pot stills, which give the spirit a distinctive character unlike most other Japanese whiskies.

20 (5)

We signed up the Saburomaru Distillery guided tour that including tasting, priced at ¥5,000 per person. The guide walked us through the process and production in the facility and ended it with tasting on their whisky and sake from the coin tasting machine. We also had a great lunch inside the facility’s restaurant!

21. Walked through the “Little Kyoto”

Higashi Chaya District is one of the most atmospheric and beautifully preserved historic districts in Japan, often described as “Little Kyoto” for its timeless charm and traditional streetscape. Lined with Wooden machiya buildings and stone-paved streets, this district is filled with cafes, craft galleries, museums, wagashi sweet shops and gold leaf boutiques.

Kanazawa is famous for its gold leaf production; Higashi Chaya is one of the best places to experience that craft culture. And of course, we couldn’t resist getting the iconic gold-covered soft serve ice cream just for the gram! LOL absolutely extra but totally worth it.

22. Warmest meal in Kushi Sakaba Daisho

It was a cold, rainy evening when we were hunting for dinner. However, every restaurant we went to didn’t accept walk-ins. We walked from the station through several streets, but every place required reservations. Eventually, we stumbled upon this standing yakitori bar, and they welcomed us in with the warmest hospitality.

Kushi Sakaba Daisho offers yakitori and delicious bar bites that pair perfectly with drinks. That night, I think we ordered almost everything on the menu. The beer was sweet and refreshing, and every dish was incredibly comforting. It ended up being the warmest meal we had throughout the whole trip — LOL.

Thanks to a sommelier friend’s recommendation, I discovered this hidden gem: Zakka + Sake Bar DEARYOU Omotesando, tucked away in a quiet alley near Omotesando. 32. A little matcha, a lot of magic!

Matcha or matcha latte is definitely a must when come to Japan. LOL. Throughout this trip, we had 3 brands – Kyo wa Matcha de Kimeru and GOKAGO in Kyoto, and Hatoya in Asakusa, Tokyo.

GOKAGO at Kiyomizu was insanely long queue. It took us about 1hour for our cup of matcha latte, from queueing to pay and until we got our cuppa. But we were informed about that at time when we made our order.
