Shun Shun Lai Cafe @ Taman Taynton View, Cheras
Shun Shun Lai Café 顺顺来咖啡馆
Shun Shun Lai Café is located at Taman Taynton View neighbourhood which has recently draw an attention to the people around this Cheras neighbourhood and people from other areas. Thanks to the power of social media, even my mum also asked me to dine in here!
Shun Shun Lai Café is a simple open-air café with a small yet creative and hearty menu specializing in Asian dishes fused with local flavours. The menu mainly comprises of rice bowl, soup with rice, small snacks, dumplings and tong sui. Price is very affordable too; main dishes are priced around Rm 20-ish and snack dishes are about Rm 8 – 9.
I daresay this is one of the recent most happening cafes in Cheras. I always see a queue on weekends whenever I pass by, and even on the weekday’s nights, there is quite a crowd! I was here twice and here is the compilation on both visits.
Osmanthus Oolong with Tea Jelly 琥珀桂花乌龙茶 (Rm 8)
Thai Crispy Tofu 泰式香酥金豆腐 (Rm 8)
Fried beancurd dressed with homemade Thai sweet chilli sauce and garnished with spring onion, peanut, pickled onion and white radish, sliced carrot. The sauce was tangy and simply appetizing.
Zesty Red Pouch 香辣红包袋 (Rm 9)
Pork cabbage dumplings dressed with chili oil, minced garlic and garnished with spring onion. Very happy to be able to get quite good dumplings drizzled in chili oil and minced garlic for the extra powerful kick near my place! I was addicted to it during my first visit; ass-kicking, additive and the dumplings were in a nice thin skin. However, on my second visit, we found that the dumplings skin was rather thicker to our liking.
Mashed Peppers with Century Egg 擂椒炸皮蛋 (Rm 9)
Homemade mashed peppers dressed over century eggs and drizzled with chili oil and touched up with spring onions. If you like century egg, you would love this. Pretty interesting. I personally prefer it with more chili kick, so I like to coat it with more chili oil. Haha.
Creamy Mongolian Pork Belly Rice 蒙古酱炒五花盖饭 (Rm 18)
One of their signature dishes with stir-fried pork belly dosed with black pepper, creamy butter sauce, curry leaves and topped with spring onions and an option of sunny side egg or onsen egg. It was packed with lots of wok hei and quite kicking, very memorable so we ordered this again on our second visit. However, it was a letdown during our second visit. The stir-fried pork was on the sweeter side, lacking the spicy kick and wok hei was not found.
This was during our first visit, and it was so good, filled with lots of wok hei.
Sour Fish Soup with Rice 酸菜鱼汤泡饭 (Rm 22)
Crispy preserved radish, fish fillets, pickled mustard greens, tomatoes, cream, Shaoxing wine. Served piping hot, it was a comforting kind of main especially during the rainy day! It was pretty appetizing with a hint of sourish-ness. Shaoxing wine added a whiff of sweetness to the sourish broth.
Dual Curry Rice 皇家咖喱饭 (Rm 20)
Curry rice came drizzled with a mix of Japanese curry and local curry, side with crispy diced potato, papadam, pan fried water chestnuts pork patties and spring onions. You can opt for karaage chicken if you are not into pork patties.
Grandma’s Braised Pork Belly Rice 外婆控肉盖饭 (Rm 20)
Slow-braised pork belly, braised egg, pickled mustard greens, ginger and scallion sauce. While we find this was rather ordinary, it was still a comfort dish, like home.
