KYOTO: I’m donut? Kyoto
I’m donut? Kyoto
I’m donut? is a wildly popular donut shop that has gotten so viral on social media, specializing in Nama donuts (生ドーナツ) that come with airy, fresh and very mochi-liked texture. Very different from the typical dried dough donut because they are lighter and more delicate.
I got really excited when I found out that I’m donut? has opened in Kyoto. I have already put it on our list—die die also must go try it during our trip in Kyoto last October!
It was a weekday morning, me and my SIL decided to head out early to queue for the donuts. We heard about the long queue and we also read about the numbering system or the ticketing system is a bit confusing. They will allow the first 100 number to enter or so, then dunno… I have no idea how about then. So, we wanna be the first batch to enter the premise and snatch the donuts (kiasu LOL).
The store opens at 9am daily. We went out at 8.10am from our hotel and left the gang to slowly wake up and prep. We then hopped on a bus at the nearest station. By around 8.40am, we were on the premise front entrance. The takeout queue was not too long yet, there were around 5 people in front of us. While there was none at the dine-in queue (there is a compulsory order of drink per pax for dine in). There was a helpful staff standing at the front entrance to guide you if you are not sure where to queue.
We felt so relief because we were the first few to enter the premise!!! And the queue wasn’t long! Yay! By 8.50am, the queue started to form a long line. More people joined in the queue and it got longer.
The Kyoto branch features a “spacey” interior design theme, bright with sleek and futuristic look. It offers over 40 flavours of donuts come with sweet and also savoury. This includes the donuts made with Kyoto vegetables – Kyo-yasai.
Look at that array of heart alluring donuts, vibrant, colorful and inviting. We wished we could pick up all the flavours on the displays, and try them all. We were glad there were many of us in this trip (many pax, more mouth and more stomach space LOL.) We ended up selecting a dozen of the donuts.
Ultra pillowy soft with slight chewiness, fluffy and airy, and moist in texture. The flavours were on point. The secret of the pillowy soft moist dough must be from the “Nama” concept they are using, with the addition of the pumpkin to keep the dough in high moisture content. Love it! The donuts were soft and moist with the great texture that’s kind of “melt-in-mouth”. You really gotta try it to understand about its texture.
I love their pistachio, their chocolate too, and the savouries one also great, basically everything is just too great. I am not bias or exaggerating! LOL
Also, I’m donut? Kyoto has this limited to store only Matcha soft serve ice cream, exclusively developed for this store. But we were here way too early (at breakfast time!!) to try out the soft serve. Well, there is always next time.
