FUKUOKA: Funahashi Yohin Ten 船橋洋品店

I absolutely love Fukuoka ’s izakaya scene! Beyond the traditional izakayas, there are so many modern-style spots serving creative Japanese tapas, beautifully plated dishes, and unique Japanese-Western fusion creations. They are truly taking izakaya dining to the next level!

I’m truly thankful to Jessie for bringing me along on this culinary adventure in Fukuoka! There’s so much more to explore beyond the usual ramen and motsunabe, and these contemporary izakayas have completely won me over. One thing to keep in mind, though: if you want to experience some of Fukuoka’s best dining spots, making a reservation is often essential!

Funahashi Yohin Ten 船橋洋品店

Tucked away in the Kego–Yakuin neighbourhood, Funahashi Yohinten is a modern-style izakaya that brings together Japanese culinary traditions and Western influences in the most creative ways. They offer creative seasonal dishes made with fresh, market-sourced ingredients.

About 5-minute walk from Yakuin-Odori Subway Station or a 10-minute walk from Tenjin Station.

And look at their sign! Instead of a conventional signboard, the lettering is created through the shadows cast by steel wires. How clever and creative is that?

Push open the restaurant’s heavy wooden door, and you’ll be welcomed into a cosy, inviting space filled with warm wood accents. The atmosphere feels intimate yet lively. If you are seated at the U-shaped counter surrounding an open kitchen, you will be able to watch the chefs work their magic right in front of you!

Honestly, I can’t remember the name of every dish we had, but each one was beautifully executed. The aromas, textures, and flavours were all on point, and every plate left me impressed. Each bite seemed to reveal another layer of thoughtfulness.

This experience completely changed my perception of izakaya dining. These modern izakayas are simply amazing — creative and full of surprises!
