Zhu Guang Yu Hotpot 朱光玉火锅馆

Comes all the way from Chong Qing, China; with over 250 outlets worldwide. They offer not only the famous Chong Qing hotpot but you may also find the local street food and snack from Chong Qing on the menu.

I didn’t know the existence of this place until Adeline suggested a hotpot dinner to celebrate Jean’s birthday. She mentioned that it is one of the most happening hotpot places now in the city. Honestly, I was pretty impressed by their food and the vibe in the restaurant!

The interior is layered with shades of red, with a little retro-ish; in a busy yet happy atmosphere, with background chats and laughter from neighbouring tables, also the staff walked over and cheered up on birthday customers, tables by tables. Very happening!

We chose the Three Flavour Pot 三拼鍋 with our choice of soup bases – Mala Pot 牛油红汤锅, Tomato Soup Base 番茄汤锅 and Golden Chestnut Chicken Soup 金汤板栗子鸡汤.

All of us couldn’t stand too spicy level but still wish to taste some numbing spiciness, so we asked for an adjustment of the spiciness to “slight spicy” level. The Chicken Soup was pretty rich and collagenous, the Tomato Soup was nice. While the Mala Pot was great for us to swish the meat slices and to cook the coagulated duck blood; the mala flavour adsorbed on the meat slices and blood cubes, passing the numbing peppercorn sensation and the chili spiciness onto the palate. Syok max! That was lip smacking good! The Coagulate Duck Blood was silky smooth and very jelly-liked, never a hint of weird taste.

There are a variety of condiments and sauces at the seasoning counter. Mix and match to create your favourite sauce.

Mine is always overloaded with spring onions, coriander, garlic in the vinegar and sesame sauce base!
